Can't Log in after using Autoruns

To read a review and download Autoruns, check out my download article here: http://godbyte.com/download/2008/02/22/autoruns

If you are not careful you could really mess up your registry here. There is a very special key: "C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe". If you delete this registry key then you could wind up not being able to log into the computer. You'll try to log in and then Windows will immediately log you out saying: "Saving your settings". The only way to fix this is to manually edit the registry through a Pre-Boot Environment.

The only way I've found to do this successfully is using Bart PE. Though if anybody else can come up with an alternative way, preferably using the Windows XP Recovery Console, please post the method here in a comment.

For instructions on how to download then edit the Registry, follow the directions here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm

Trinity?

I haven't actually played with registry hacking with this tool, but I have used Trinity Rescue Kit to reset system passwords and the like, and it is much faster than loading into a BartPE environment through, say, UBCD4WIN.

Only problem is, I don't know the registry editing capabilities of TRK.

Either way, good luck to you.

Trinity Rescue Kit

Well their website wasn't all that impressive, was that whole thing hard-coded? Not impressed yet, hopefully their lack of ability in web programming is due to a focus in Application Development.

Downloading and testing now.
